Why do you use a wood/steel tree?
The wood/steel tree is far superior to other trees
because it allows the rider to get closer to the horse. This tree
can be tailor-made to a horse’s wither measurement. Importantly,
the rider’s weight is spread evenly each side of the horse’s
spine. The tree chamber is hollow and it is this which is over the
horse’s spine.
What is the advantage of the swinging fender saddle?
This style allows for full leg movement. My fenders
are swung from the stirrup bar and can be taken off.
Why break the neck?
A broken neck allows the rider to sit deep in the
saddle and not on it. It’s also about ‘security’.
The stock saddle gives you this!
How long is the tree guaranteed for?
My custom-made wood/steel trees carry a 10 year guarantee.
What is the difference between a Porter’s saddle
and a mass-produced saddle?
I individually handcraft each saddle from start to
finish. I make them the traditional way keeping quality control
over every aspect of the saddle-making. It is labour-intensive and
cannot be assembled in 7-8 hours. My leather is hand-picked
for each order so I keep wastage to a minimum and can be particular
in choosing the best.
The many advantages to the wood/steel tree also include:
- Its structure - a heavier head stops any chance of it spreading
wider
- Some of the saddle–making process includes cutting, skiving
and dyeing, all by hand
- The seat shape is achieved by using leather bellies
- Seats are hand-seamed. I also hand-stitch around knee pads
- Moulded trees cannot be made to wither measurements whereas
points on my trees can be spread to suit an individual horse
- You will sit closer to the horse
- You will have a more comfortable ride
- The finish and detail is far superior
- These saddles will last a lifetime and can be repaired after
many years of active service.
How long have you been making saddles?
Since 1980. I have exported
to the USA and Hong Kong. I currently export to Canada. My saddles
go to all parts of Australia.
